Adolescent Medicine
Your Child's Medical Home

In order to give your child the best care, our practice strives to provide a medical home to your child. The American Academy of Pediatrics defines a medical home as primary care that is accessible, comprehensive, continuous, coordinated, family-centered, compassionate and culturally effective.

Our responsibilities as your medical home are to:

  1. obtain a complete and updated medical history for our patients at their visits
  2. support open-access scheduling to give you accessible medical care
  3. coordinate your child's care across multiple medical specialities
  4. support our families' and patient's self-management of medical challenges.

Please let us have your suggestions to improve your child's medical care!

Sick Visits
We offer same-day acute care visits by appointment. Saturday hours are for acute care visits only from 9:00am to 12:00pm (noon). Call to make an appointment.

Well Child Visits
A well child visit is a comprehensive evaluation that includes:

  1. Measurements of growth parameters and monitoring based on age-related norms
  2. Vital signs
  3. Vision screening beginning at age 3
  4. Hearing screening beginning at age 4
  5. Review of age-appropriate developmental milestones, including academic functioning for school-aged patients
  6. Discussion of diet, sleep, physical activity
  7. Discussion of social and family functioning
  8. Discussion about risk factors and safety
  9. Anticipatory guidance and counseling
  10. Completion of daycare, school, sports, and camp forms
  11. Vaccine administration as applicable
  12. Age-appropriate laboratory screening (hemoglobin, lead, cholesterol, etc)

Age-specific information for each visit can be found on our Resources: Well Child Packets web page.

The well-child evaluation detailed above usually takes up the entire visit. If there is sufficient time, we are sometimes able to address additional concerns, such as followup for chronic medical problems (ADHD, asthma, constipation) or acute illnesses (colds, ear infections, rashes). Addressing these additional concerns will result in another office charge for which you may be required to pay a copay or deductible according to your insurance policy. If there is not sufficient time to address the additional concerns, we will ask that you schedule a follow-up appointment to allot time to properly address that specific concern.

Vaccines and vaccine-preventable illnesses

The safety and effectiveness of vaccines in preventing serious or life-threatening illnesses is well-established and has been supported by overwhelmingly strong evidence over the last 50 years. Hillsborough Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine is committed to giving our patients the best protection available against life-threatening illnesses such as pertussis (whooping cough), meningitis, measles and tetanus.

These illnesses are still in our community or are only a plane ride away from entering our community. In the past few years, Orange County has had outbreaks of both measles and pertussis, and most of the cases occurred in families who chose not to vaccinate. This outbreak exposed many other NC children to this potentially fatal illness.

One way we protect our patients is by providing vaccines and advising that your children receive vaccines according to the American Academy of Pediatrics and Center of Disease Controls schedule. However, babies too young to receive vaccines, and other patients with weak or compromised immune systems, are still vulnerable to these illnesses from exposure in the community. Because we are committed to protecting all our patients, even those too young or immunocompromised to obtain protection from vaccination, HPAM’s policy is to not accept those families into our practice who have decided against all vaccines for their children and are not interested in discussions about vaccines.

We welcome parents’ vaccines questions and concerns and will address these concerns with respect and care. We are also committed to providing a safe environment for our babies and immunocompromised patients. Our priority is the health and well-being of all our patients.

ADD/ADHD Management
Patients who take daily medication for ADD/ADHD should be seen every three months. Additionally, your child should be seen within thirty days of any medication changes. These visits allow us to assess your child’s overall functioning as well as evaluate side effects.

Most medications used to treat ADD/ADHD symptoms are controlled substances that cannot be faxed, electronically sent, or called-in to the pharmacy. These prescriptions must be on paper and physically picked up in the office by the child’s guardian.

It is your responsibility to contact our office for a new prescription, preferably a few days before the new prescription is needed. Our doctors have 48 hours to refill medication requests, so please plan ahead.

Prenatal Visits
Our doctors are happy to meet with expecting parents to answer questions and discuss our practice at no charge.

Newborn Visits
Your newborn will need to be seen in our office 1 to 2 days after discharge from hospital. Subsequent visits vary and are based upon initial exam.Parents are to call from hospital prior to discharge to set up the first appointment.

Asthma Management
We like to see our patients with reactive airway disease or asthma regularly every three months. These visits allow us to assess how well-controlled the asthma symptoms are and determine whether or not changes in medications would help control asthma symptoms better.

The visit also allows us to decrease or discontinue medications that are no longer needed.  We want to minimize/eliminate asthma flares, ER visits, and hospitalizations so that your child can run and play and fully participate in life. Some signs that your child’s asthma is not well-controlled may include but are not limited to the following: needing to use albuterol more than 2-3 times per week, getting short of breath with activities, awakening from sleep with cough more than a few times a week, and wheezing.

Please call our office for an appointment sooner than the typical 3-month follow-up if you think your child’s asthma is not well-controlled.

Advice Nurse
We have a Registered Nurse available during regular office hours to answer questions and triage your child.

After-hours we offer a Registered Nurse triage service.  The contact number is: 877-514-2253. A fee for this service may apply.

Other Services
Ear piercing done by Dr. Melissa Clepper-Faith. The cost is $60.00 which includes piercing, earrings, and cleaning solution.

We fill out school, camp, and sports physical forms.  If these are not done at time of visit, a $10.00 form fee applies.

Testimonial

"We absolutely love the care we get at Hillsborough Pediatrics! The doctors and nurses are wonderful! We are new parents and they always take the time to answer our questions and ease our concerns. Our daughter had significant feeding issues as a newborn and they were extremely supportive and positive in helping us during that difficult time. We can not say enough great things about the care we receive!"
